Heroic Scholar Killed. – During last week, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowen, Llandilo Road, received a letter from their son, Private. D. J. Bowen, stating that his comrade and old friend, Private. Vivian Morgan, of the Seaforths, had been killed in action. He was greatly perturbed over it. He had the opportunity of shaking hands with poor Vivian before he went into action, and subsequently was informed that he had been fatally injured by a shell bullet. The news caused a wave of consternation to pass over the place. Vivian was generally liked by the villagers, being of a quiet and modest disposition. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Morgan, Cartref Clyd, have since been officially apprised of the occurrence. Vivian enlisted just after the outbreak of war, joining the Gordon Highlanders along with three other young Brynammanites, since transferred to the Seaforths. They have all made the supreme sacrifice except his nephew, Private. Evan Llewelyn, who is just recovering from serious wounds. Vivian had been before wounded at Mametz Wood. Previous to joining the Forces he was a teacher at the Upper Schools, and passed the Welsh Matriculation when about 17 years of age, being only 19 at his death. A bright future was predicted for him in the scholastic line. He is the twenty-first Brynamman hero to fall during this great war. Evidently, poor Vivian fell the same day as Private. Johnny Thomas, Welsh Guards – Oct. 12th. The deepest sympathy is manifested towards the family in their dark hour. They are the recipients of the deep sympathy of the King and Queen and the Army Council also. (F)
