Brynamman Guardsman killed. – Private Jack Philips, Welsh Guards, writing to his wife from France the other day, stated that he was all right at the time, but that he had very sad news to relate. His best pal and comrade, Private Jack Thomas, of the same regiment, had fallen in action on October 11th, having been caught in the neck by shrapnel, death being instantaneous. Also Johns of Swansea, had made the supreme sacrifice just at the same moment. He was deeply grieved over it, as he had lost two of his most gallant intimate friends. Private Johnny Thomas was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Lewis, Station Road, his wife residing at Cwmgarw Road, with one child. He was at home on leave about two months ago, returned to action, and was wounded. Recovering from his injuries, he again went to battle, and fell as described. Last Monday, official confirmation of the sad news was received from the War Office, with the King and Queen’s and the Army Council’s sympathy. Deceased was about 36 years of age, a strapping soldier of 2½ years experience, full of the right military spirit, but of a quiet and modest disposition. Deep and general is the sympathy manifested towards the sorrowing wife and child, parents, and brothers and sisters in their hour of tribulation.
