BRYNAMMAN SOLDIER KILLED.

20th September 1917

Driver Aneurin Jones.

On August 23rd, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Jones, Pwllyfan, Llandilo Road, received a report to the effect that their son, Driver Aneurin Jones, had been killed in action.

As the number on the report did not correspond with that of the soldier, doubts were entertained as the veracity of the distressing news, and inquiries were made.

Last Monday, sad to relate, the parents received a really touching letter confirming the first report, and stating that deceased had been struck by a shell on August 2nd, and killed without suffering a moment’s pain. This letter was from his officer, T. H. Panker, R. F. A., who in the meantime had been in hospital, and had forgotten the address.

A more eulogistic report was never received from an officer anent a servant. Among many other estimable statements, he described the deceased driver as “being more than a servant to him. He was, indeed, a real companion, and the pet of the battery, being loved by both officers and men. He did not seem to know the meaning of fear, and was always happy and cheery. He (the officer) could not help but share every bit of what he had with Aneurin. He would treasure a photo of him very much indeed.” This photo has been sent.

Driver Aneurin Jones had been with the Forces the last three years, and was only 23 years of age. He has a brother, Private Myrddin Jones, also with the Colours. The fact that Myrddin wrote home recently, stating that he had written Aneurin several times, but he had had no answer, is full of pathos.

Some time ago a son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Jones, Private Isaac Davies, died of fever in India. It may be explained that Driver Aneurin Jones was killed during the Ypres advance, and the fact that he had lately been promoted Gunner was responsible for the difference in his number. The family are deeply sympathised with in their additional sorrow.
