GARNANT NOTES .

13th September 1917

Sergt. Geo. Crump

Official intimation has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Crump, Twyn, that their son, Sergt. Geo. Crump, was killed in action on the 16th August.

The following letter was received from the Front, sent by 2nd Lieut. R. S. Thomas : — “Dear Sir, – I hasten to pen these lines to express my heartfelt sympathy in the irreparable loss you have sustained by the death in action of your son.

Sergt. Crump was my platoon sergeant, and it was entirely due to his untiring energies that my platoon played such a prominent part in the recent heavy fighting.

His self control and coolness under fire and undoubted efficiency made him a leader beyond praise, and the impression he made on us all cannot be overestimated. The world is indeed poorer of a fine and noble character, and for my part he is irreplaceable. The N. C. O.’s and men of the platoon wish me to convey to your their sympathies in your bereavement.”

Sergt. Crump was the first from Garnant to win the Military Medal for bravery on the field. His photo appeared in the Amman Valley Chronicle at the time he came home for a short time amongst us in Garnant, when he had an excellent send-off.
