Sergt. Geo. Powney

Sudden Death – Quite unexpected there passed away, on Sunday evening, Sergt. Geo. Powney, 11th Batt. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Deceased was but 28 years of age, and was about on Saturday.

He had participated in the great war almost since hostilities broke out, enlisting in September, 1914. He had been with the Colours prior to this. Twelve months ago, while in action at Salonica, he was seriously wounded, a bullet penetrating the base of the nose and coming out just under the right temple, affecting his right eye to such a degree as to necessitate the removal of that optic.

Since, he had been complaining of pains in the head, never having fully recovered from the injuries sustained. He was member of a very patriotic family, his brother being Sergt. Arthur Powney, Glyn Road, who also died of wounds sustained in action, and whose funeral, some three years ago, will be long remembered as one of the largest ever seen in the district, between 5,000 and 6,000 people being present.

Deceased is the twenty-second Brynamman hero to fall in this great conflict of nations. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Powney, Emporium Terrace, Cwmgarw Road, Brynamman, and leaves a wife and two children.
Deep sympathy is extended the family in their sad bereavement. The funeral, which probably will be fully military, will take place on Saturday for interment at St. Catherine’s Church burial ground. (F)
