WELSH FLAG DAY.
With cards and flags abundant
The jolly sellers came
To landlord and to tenant,
Dressed like the old Welsh Dame;
They chased the greedy miser,
And made the beggar pay
Just like the honest worker,
On the Welsh Flag Day.
Escaping was not easy —
All after me they ran;
They guessed I had some money,
For I’m a single man;
I pleased so many beauties,
Until, to my dismay,
My little bank was broken,
On the Welsh Flag Day.
I teased the married ladies : —
I would not dare before,
For fear their jealous “hubbies”
Would make my ears right sore;
But now their men were smiling,
Harsh words they could not say : —
I had the right of flirting,
On the Welsh Flag Day.
The girls that walked the village,
Too proud to say Good-night,
This day somehow did manage
To chat with me all right;
With faces no more frowning,
With hearts so full of play,
The joy was never ending,
On the Welsh Flag Day.
Some greeted me by smiling,
Some gave me the “glad eye,”
And at the same time asking,
“Old darling, will you buy?”
If Derby would have tarried
To take my likes away,
Indeed, I would have married,
On the Welsh Flag Day.
WILL HOPCYN.
