[GARNANT NOTES].

30th November 1916

MR. IVOR Hayward.

Mr. Tom Hayward, Arcade Terrace, Garnant, has received official confirmation that his son Ivor has been killed in action in Salonica on the 5th November.

Ivor went out with the first batch from Cwmamman to France, where he was for a time in the trenches. Afterwards he was removed to Salonica, and there he was fighting for King and country for over fifteen months as a scout in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

Previous to enlisting, Ivor was engaged as an engineman at Gellyceidrim and Raven Colliery, where he was very highly respected by his fellow-workmen. He was 22 years of age, and exempted, but he insisted on coming forward to give all for his country. His captain thought very highly of him, as the following letter will prove : —

“Dear Mr. Hayward, – It is my painful duty to inform you that your son died of wounds on the 5th of November. He was one of my best scouts, and was just returning to report to me when a bullet got him in the stomach. He died almost as soon as he reached the field ambulance.

He was one of my most reliable men. He knew his duty and always did it thoroughly. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy.”
Mr. Hayward also received the sympathy of the King and Queen, through Mr. Lloyd George, Jueen, through Mr. D. Lloyd George.

The whole inhabitants of the district extend their sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Hayward, who mourn the loss of their gallant son.
