SARON SOLDIER'S DEATH.

23rd March 1916

Private John Jones.

OUR LETTER BOX.

Rev. ARTHUR HUGHES

Mr. Jones, of No. 4, Dogsbrook Terrace, Saron, has received the following letter from the Rev. Arthur Hughes, chaplain, Brigade Headquarters, B. E. F., France, dated March 11th 1916 : —

“By the time this letter reaches you, you will have learned the sad news of the death of your son, Private John Jones, and I write to tell you how deeply I feel with you in your sad loss.

Your son has made the greatest sacrifice that he could make – he has given his life for others. ‘Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends’ (John v. 13). You, too, have made a great sacrifice in giving him, and I pray that you may be given strength to bear the great sacrifice you have made.

We laid your son to rest yesterday in a cemetery just behind the line where he fell, and some of the officers and men of his battalion came to pay the last respects to the fallen comrade.

It will be a comfort to you to know that your son did not endure any sufferings, but passed away instantaneously. I am glad to be able to tell you, too, that your son was spoken highly of both as a soldier and a man.

Pleas accept my sincerest sympathy, and I pray that you will know in this dark hour the comfort and help of God, our Father.” The deceased was Mrs. Jones’ only son.
