News has been received by his parent of the death of Evan Lewis, of Afaina House, Florence Road, Ammanford, from gunshot wounds in the breast.

He was serving with the R. F. A., and December 16th met with his injuries, dying the following day in hospital. He was a native of Carmarthen, and only 21 years of age.

At the outbreak of the war he was a collier at Tirydail, and failing to pass the doctor at Ammanford, proceeded to Tumble, where he was successful and enlisted. He had been for five months in the Dardanelles and at Cape Helas. While at Ammanford he was a faithful member of Ebenezer Chapel, and also took part in “The Middleman” when it was performed by the I. O. G. T. Dramatic Society at the opening of the New Palace Theatre.

Sapper M. Anthony, Royal Engineers, son of Mr. J. Anthony, Eirianfa, Glanamman, and formerly of the Telegraph Hotel, Ammanford, is lying in the 11th General Hospital, Boulogne, France, suffering from a severe gunshot wound in the left foot, received in the battle of Loos.

He was admitted into hospital on the 16th December, and has written home to say:

“Although I am in hospital it has been one of the best Christmas Days I can remember plenty of everything to eat and a splendid concert in the evening.” He hopes all enjoyed themselves at home, and concludes by wishing them a happy New Year.

During the battle in which he was wounded he was in temporary charge while the sergeant was away, and on being carried on a stretcher to hospital he met another party bearing the dead body of the sergeant. + photo 2W
