Priv. Ernest H. Roberts M.M. Battle of the Somme [Palace] Barnardo Saturday Fund

DISTRICT NEWS.

The first Ammanford soldier to win the Military Medal is Private Ernest H. Roberts, son of the late Mr. Henry Roberts and Mrs. Roberts, of High Street.

He is a brother of Mr. D. A. Roberts, cashier at Wernos Colliery, and of Miss May Roberts, organist at St. Michael’s Church.

His many friends are glad to see home, although on sick leave, Private Teddy Morgan, Ammanford, a well known member of the old cricket team and a keen all-round sportsman. He was in the Battle of the Somme, and has witnessed scenes that he does not care to describe, and being wounded, was for some time in hospital in Liverpool, to which place he has to return.

The people of Ammanford and the Valley generally will on the first three days of next week have an opportunity of witnessing that much-talked-of official picture. “The Battle of the Somme,” at the Palace Theatre.

There are five parts, and never in the history of cinematography have such wonderful pictures been presented to the public. The reality of war is vividly shewn, and certain aspects of the brilliant advance of British soldiers, of whom the nation has just cause to be proud.

BARNARDO SATURDAY FUND.

The annual local house-to-house collection on behalf of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes was organised this year by the Rev. D. Tegfan Davies, Christian Temple, assisted by a band of excellent collectors who are always ready to render service in the cause of humanity.

It is interesting to note that 7,500 are now in the Homes – the largest family in the world; £240 needed daily for food; 82,000 destitute children have been rescued; 4,000 Barnardo boys are serving King and country in the Army and Navy; and over 3,000 have been placed in the Mercantile Marine Dr. Barnardo devoted his life to save and succour the nation’s needy children, the result of which will remain a lasting memorial to his name.
