Two tramping labourers Work on the Land

TWO TRAMPING LABOURERS ARRESTED.

At Ammanford Police Court, on Tuesday, before Mr. Henry Herbert and Mr. Jno. Lewis, Arthur Lew and D. Kelcher, two tramping labourers, who had been arrested the previous night by P. S. Morgan at Llandebie, were charged with being absentees under the Military Service Act.

Sergt. Walsh, D. C. M., said the notice sent to each man was returned marked “Unknown.” However, proclamations had been posted up throughout the districts.

They had registered. Both said they were prepared to serve King and country, and they were remanded to await an escort. The usual minimum fine of £2 was imposed upon each man, to be deducted out of his Army pay.

The appearance of these men caused a good deal of amusement. One had whiskers of at least a week’s growth, and the other a beard a couple of inches long. They were in such a condition that they had to be given a bath, a haircut and shave, and one of them it was necessary to rig out in an old uniform of the Welsh Regiment before he could be “presented at Court.”

There was a good attendance, and at the close a committee was formed to further the object.
