SAVED BY CIGARETTE CASE.
Private J. THOMAS.
Private J. Thomas, 1/4 th Welsh, son of Mr. Rees Thomas, Penygroes, who before enlisting was employed at London House, Ammanford, writes from the Cardiff Hospital : -
"I have been slightly wounded in the side, but am glad to say it is cured up all right. Shall not be long before I am ready for the firing line again, but I hope I shall have a few days' furlough before returning.
You can see by above address I have been lucky enough to get to Cardiff. I never thought when I left England I should have been one of the luckiest to come back at all.
Our regiment has been in the thick of it ever since we have been out, and it has been badly cut up, the same as all the other regiments that landed here.
The reason I have saved so well without being badly wounded is that I happened to have a lot of books in my pocket, and also my cigarette case. The bullet pierced the books and smashed my cigarette case, so the course of the bullet was turned sideways."
