AMMANFORD SOLDIERS KILLED AND WOUNDED. The death from wounds in hospital at the base in France is reported of Private Arthur Williams, of 33, Heol Las, Ammanford. Letters from his comrades, Lance-Corpl. J. Evans, of Cross Hands, and Private Stephen Grant, Ammanford, the latter being wounded in the same charge, speak of his bravery and cheerfulness. We very much regret to have to recorded the death from wounds received in action, of Private Garfield Evans, son of Mr. Evans, of Hall Street , who has just received as official intimation of the untimely event. 30/9/1915 AMMANFORD SOLDIER'S DEATH. As briefly announced in our last issue, official news was received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Evans, of Field Street, Ammanford, of the death from wounds of Private Garfield Evans, of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who before enlistment was a night rider at Park Colliery. His friends had been prepared for the event by sympathetic letters received from Mr. W. B. Williams, Inspector-General of Public Works Department in Egypt, who is a native of Fishguard. Writing on August 27 th , Mr. Williams said: “While visiting the wounded in No. 21 (Ras-el-Tin) Hospital in Alexandria three days ago I came across your son, Garfield Evans, of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who has returned from the Dardanelles. He has been rather badly wounded by a shrapnel bullet, which struck him at the back of the neck and traversed the throat and lodged near the cheekbone under the left eye. You will be glad to hear that he is cheery. We have had long talks often in Welsh, and I went again to see him last evening, and took him some cigarettes and chocolate. He was in the fighting at the landing near Suavala Bay , from where so many of our gallant lads will never return to ‘ yr hen wlad. ‘ They had severe losses, and I believe the loss in officers of the 5 th , 6 th , and 7 th Battalions was very heavy, owing to the snipers, some of whom were women! Your son is very well cared for at the hospital, and sends his love to you and his mother and the family, and ‘cofion ?wr ‘ to all his friends. I hope to see him again soon.” Later, on September 5th , Mr. Williams wrote: “I am writing to you again about your son, Garfield Evans, and am sorry to say he is not now doing so well as was expected. The climate is very trying just now – hot and humid, and the wound seems to have affected his right lung and rendered breathing more difficult. I have seen him several times – the last time yesterday morning, and will go again to-morrow of next day, and hope they will give a more favourable report; but I do not wish to raise your hopes, and am afraid that at present I cannot write very cheerily about him, poor fellow. Though weak, he is very plucky and tries to be cheery. I must close now with my deep sympathy to you all, but still hope for the best and to be able to send you better news next time, if God wills.” ![]() Private W. Evans, son of Mr. Wm. Evans, Parkland Terrace, Tirydail. He was wounded in the head at the Dardanelles, and is now in a convalescent camp at Alexandria.
Private D. J. Allen, (above) 4 th Welsh, son of Mr. T. Allen, 4 Park Terrace, Dyffryn Road, Ammanford, who was wounded at the Dardanelles in the right wrist and right thigh. We learn also that Corporal T. Alcwyn Jones, son of Mrs. Jones, London House, has been severely wounded in the eye. NOTES OF THE WEEK. P4 As showing the urgent necessity for the services of medical men at the Front, in connection with the forward movement of the Allies, a call has been made by the Government, through the British Medical Association for one in three of all doctors under 40 years of age to come up before Christmas. In the South West Wales Division, of which Dr. Price, of Ammanford, is the honorary secretary, every effort has been made to get the most eligible men, and some hard canvassing has been done, with the result that already seven of the required twelve have been enrolled. This is in addition to thirty medical men from the division who are serving with the Colours. A committee has been appointed to interview every eligible man in the three counties, and they are confident of making up the quota required. The medical gentlemen remaining behind have undertaken to carry on the practices of those called up until their return. It behoves all patients not to harass the doctors too much by petty ailments and cut fingers, so that there may not be a breakdown in the scheme by overworking their medical attendants. * * * *
The local recruiting office is busily engaged filling up the “pink” cards which have been directed to be made out for all those eligible men who have not yet offered their services to their country. These, we understand, are to be delivered personally, and the recipients will be asked on or two pertinent questions as to why they have not joined. There are a number of men who are not inclined to await the receipt of the card, and are coming forward to enlist. |
OUR ROLL OF HONOUR. P6
“He who fights well without being killed has not only more good fortune than those who lie dead on the field; he has also the same moral worth. The man who is hit is to be lamented. But he has no precedence over the survivor.” — German soldier. We here publish what we hope will eventually be a complete list of all those patriotic and praiseworthy men of East Carmarthenshire who are doing military service for the welfare of the nation and the safety of the British Empire. We shall be glad to receive intimation of the names of those numerous young men who have enlisted from this part of the county at recruiting stations beyond the possible sphere of our enquiries. We shall be glad also of the names of all men who have been called up from the district to join the Colours, with particulars, if any, of their previous service with His Majesty's Forces, or of their ordinary occupation, the Regiments or the Ships they have joined, or are joining, together with any other items that may be of interest. No detail need be too insignificant to notice. Letters from the Front will be welcomed, as well as particulars of all promotions from Lance-Corporal upwards, and the names and addresses of men who come home on leave. All communications should be addressed to the Editor, Amman Valley Chronicle and East Carmarthen News, Quay Street , Ammanford.
LATE WAR NEWS. P? The Allies are maintaining their offensive, which has been in progress for four days. There is an incessant battle raging in Champagne, and three German Army Corps have been wiped out, or between 120,000 and 150,000 men. This includes 23,000 prisoners. |
