PROGRESS OF THE WAR. Back Page
The attack upon Serbia by the Austro-Germans has begun, and Serbia is now fighting on two fronts, for on Monday Bulgarian attacks began at a point north-ease of Nish. So far all the Bulgarian attacks have been heavily repulsed.
The Germans report the capture of the town and obsolete fort of Semendria and an advance on the entire front. The latter vague claim is certainly inaccurate.
The Serbians are giving fine proof of their fighting qualities. South of Ram they have flung the Germans back to the Danube and on the heights south of Belgrade broke the enemy attacks with heavy losses. Britain has broken off diplomatic relations with Bulgaria.
HEAVY GERMAN ATTACKS.
South of Belgrade the enemy claims the capture of a village and some heights. The Austrians announced on Tuesday that all the heights within gun range of the river crossings had been taken.
From Roumania it is reported that the Russians are preparing to land in great force on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. According to a well informed source Roumania has definitely assured the Allies of her assistance, but will choose her own hour.
An early announcement as to Italian participation in the Balkans is expected. The Russians have completely beaten the enemy on the River Strypa, in Galicia, and are advancing across the river, whilst a very favourable change has come over the Dvinsk front.
Two heavy German attacks in the Vosges on Tuesday only resulted in the gain of about 80 yards of trench. Berlin reports big French attacks in Champagne on Wednesday.
ZEPPELIN RAID ON LONDON.
The Press Bureau, by instructions from the Home Secretary, announce that a Zeppelin raid was made on Wednesday evening over a portion of the London area, when a certain number of incendiary and explosive bombs were dropped.
The material damage done is small. A few fires resulted, but were quickly put out by the fire brigade. The Admiralty will issue a statement today, when particulars are available. At present it is only possible to say that no public buildings were injured, and the casualties so far reported are : — Two women and six men killed, and about 34 persons injured. With the exception of one soldier killed al of these were civilians. These figures include all the casualties reported at 11.45 on Wednesday evening.

WELSH BAYONET CHARGES. P7
To the Editor, Amman Valley Chronicle.
Sir,— you may like to have the following extract from one of my husband's letters, as no doubt it will please people who have relatives serving in the 4 th Welsh in the Dardanelles : —
“The Welsh from Ammanford and Llandilo have greatly distinguished themselves out here; one could hear all the other regiments shouting our, ‘Stick it Welsh.'
In a dozen bayonet charges that they made out here they swept everything before them.
They have done better than any other Territorials out here, even officers of other regiments, when compelled to retire, shouting to the Welsh to ‘Stick it'; a trenchful of the Welsh keeping back thousands of Turks. They are about due to return from the trenches for a rest, as they generally stay there a fortnight and then rest a week, so expect to see some of them then.
We have a nice healthy camp about a mile from the sea, where our Navy is firing day and night with the big guns. There are no houses of any description near us, so we are getting a bit tired of the scenery. Of course, we have millions of flies to keep us company during the day.” — I am, &c.,
(Mrs.) W. E. MORGAN.
