WALES AND WAR Patriotic Fervour. P1
There is no diminution in the patriotic fervour of Wales. Offers still continue to be made for active service, and prompt steps have been taken to enlist men for Lord Kitchener's Second Army. Meanwhile, all measures are being taken to strengthen the defences of our shores, and elaborate precautions are being made for the protection of life and property. The Cardiff Corporation, who have established a guarantee fund of £10,000 brave also set an example to employers by deciding to make up the wages of all their employees who are serving with the colours. The Lord Mayor of Cardiff has issued a further appeal for a Welsh hospital in the area of conflict, and has outlined his scheme, which is estimated to cost £15,000. The Government is providing base hospitals in the Principality, and no effort is being spared to alleviate distress. A strict guard is being kept on our foes at home, and many have appeared at the local police courts. It has been intimated that the Flat Holm will be used as a place of detention for German prisoners.
AMMANFORD LINEN GUILD ANXIOUS TO ALLEVIATE THE SUFFERINGS OF WOUNDED FROM THE WAR. P5
Suggestion of Local Temporary Hospital We are officially informed that it has been decided to utilise the organisation and aid of the Linen Guild in connection with the Swansea Hospital to help the sick and wounded from the war. All the members are therefore asked to get their contributions ready as early as possible so as to send them to the depot in Swansea. If it should be decided to put up a Temporary Hospital in Ammanford, all help possible will be given from the Swansea depot towards making such an accomplished fact. In the meantime all contributions in kind or money will be thankfully received by the Vice-Presidents - Mrs. Herbert, Brynmarlais; Mrs. Fisher, Wansbeck; Mrs. Philips, Parcyrynn; and Miss Williams, Gwynfryn.
STOP PRESS FOR WAR NEWS. P1
Terrific cannonading was heard at Maastricht yesterday. The Liege forts were heavily engaged, and it was believed that the expected great battle was in progress. All along the lines in Belgium as along the French lines, the rival armies are in close touch. The Goeben and Breslau, having entered the Dardanelles, are reported sold to Turkey. Great Britain is in a state of war with Austria. The declaration of war will be gazetted as soon as possible.
RE-RECRUITING P1
Our Territorials are at present stationed at Dale, under the command of Captain Lloyd. The patriotic spirit is predominate here, and in the surrounding districts. All recruiting for the Territorials has been stopped for the present, and a telegram to the Drill Hall on Tuesday last gave the information that it is, for the time being, not a recruiting depot, so all recruits for the Regulars are sent down to the offices at Carmarthen. It is not possible to specify the exact number of recruits, but Ammanford and the district are credited with a good number.

AMMANFORD AND THE WAR. LOCAL EFFECTS OF THE CRISIS. P1
The present and near future time is the most extraordinary in the annals of our generation. So swiftly have momentous events succeeded each other, so packed is the story of the present with incident and breathless change, that the very pace of history has been accelerated. On all sides, time is speeding with wings of turmoil and unrest, and our one time colossal disputes are dwarfed by the upheaval of "The European Pandemonium."
THE INDUSTRIAL PROBLEM.
The effect of this is international strife penetrates everywhere, its omnipresent aspect permeates all industrial concerns, and necessitates the reduction of output, thus minimising the labour of our community. The local anthracite coal trade has been badly affected, and so far as we have been able to ascertain, the following is the position :-
Ammanford Colliery - Working .
Tirydail Colliery - Working (part-time).
Wernos Colliery - Idle.
Rhos Colliery - Idle.
Park Colliery - Idle.
Pantyffynnon Colliery - Idle.
Emlyn Colliery - Idle.
Bettws Red Vein Colliery - Idle.
OFFICIAL FOOD PRICES.
It will not be necessary to guard and escort our food supplies by troops with fixed bayonets, and no deplorable disturbances will be provoked, for the government have taken energetic steps in fixing a maximum tariff, and every good housewife, whole policy must be "Waste not, want not," would do wisely to remember the following prices, and if she would be charged more, then she may communicate her grievance to the Commercial Department, Board of Trade Offices, Gwydr House, Whitehall-street, London, S.W. Do not use a stamp, but put O.H.M.S. in the corner of the envelope, and the government will do the rest.
