LEADING FIREMAN W. G. Harries Retirement

HIS FIRE-FIGHTING DAYS ARE OVER

From now on Mr. W. G. Harries, of Arosfa, Heol Las, Ammanford, will have more time to enjoy the warmth and comfort of his own hearth fire instead of being called at all hours of the day and night to do service with the Ammanford section of the Joint Counties Fire Brigade.

Leading Fireman Harries retired yesterday after giving 14 years' service as a retained fireman and five years as a full-time fireman.

He is unable to say how many fires he has attended during this time but a rough estimate, he says, would be between three and four hundred.

Mr. Harries joined the then National Fire Service as a part-time fireman in 1940 and in May 1941, was appointed one of six full-time firemen in Ammanford.

After only two months he was transferred to Milford Haven and from there to Narberth, then to Pontardawe, and eventually, in October, 1944 he returned to Ammanford.

He completed his full-time service in May, 1946, when he was made a retained member of the National Fire Service.

In 1949 the Carmarthenshire and Cardiganshire Joint Fire Brigade was formed, and for the greater part of this period Mr. Harries has held the rank of Leading Fireman.

Mr. Harries has been an agent in Ammanford for the last 29 years, for the Wesleyan and General Insurance Society.
