CLOSE CALL Amman Valley residence came within a whisker of a major Black Mountain fire at the weekend.

SPECTACULAR SCENES OF A FLAMING APRIL NIGHT
THESE are the spectacular scenes watched by hundreds of Amman Valley residents on Sunday after the Black Mountain went up in flames.
Photographer Gareth Jordan, of Hendre Road, Garnant, was able to capture the dramatic sight of land at Llandeilo Road ablaze on camera.
His pictures show the flames, which could be seen for many miles around, and the dark black smoke which clogged the air.
Gareth said: “I was first alerted to the fire by a friend who lives on the other side of the hill to me.
“He rang up to ask why he hadn't been invited to the barbecue?
“I wasn't sure what he was talking about until he told me that the hill was on fire!
“I couldn't see it from my house, so I went over to Garnant Golf Club, and realised what he meant.
“We have had a couple of fires in the area recently, the others being caused by irresponsible juveniles. I am not sure of the cause of this latest fire.
“I thought that the fire would have died out quite quickly, but it burned on into the night, with the flames fanned b strong winds.”
Firefighters were called to the mountain at 4.45 pm. Three engines battled for nearly five hours to bring the fire under control.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
