Mr. J. W. Nicholas, corner, held an enquiry at Bryn Seion Vestry, Derwydd Road, on Saturday last, on the body of a two-year-old child, named Sidney Hentry Alexander Field, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Daniel Field, of 3, Cennen Terrace, Derwydd Road.
It appeared from the evidence that the mother left the child with two others in the house while she went to the Post Office shop for some firewood. There was no fire in the house, but she placed a lighted candle on the hob, as she had no matches. In her absence a four-year-old child removed the candle from the hob to the fender near where the deceased was playing.
As the mother returned from the shop she heard screams, and saw the deceased coming from the house with his clothes in flames. Dr. Cook was sent for, and came three hours afterwards, to find the child’s back, shoulders and neck badly burnt. He attended him until his death on Friday at noon.
The jury returned a verdict of “Death from shock, consequent upon burns accidentally received.” They recommended the parents to provide a fireguard.
