WHEEL BARROW RACE
2nd JUNE 1983
|
Ever ready to raise money for charity the station took part in the Lion's Wheel Barrow Race. Above is the first years entry made by a few of us following my design. The paper mash I learned while helping my father during the carnival days. The day was an exhausting day. What was to be a stroll in the park turned into a race. We thought it would be a walk from pub to pub downing our half and moving on. The fact that a weight was placed in the barrow and we were dressed in our fire kit with the sun beating down and the route lined with spectators we could hardly walk and so got caught up in the chase. The fire department was outrun by the rugby players, but they got there with the mostest in the way of a barrow decorated with a miniature engine, bell, siren and buckets. The firemen won the prize for the best-dressed barrow in the Lions sponsored barrow race. |

The event existed for about 3 years and was good fun. It was one of the good ideas had by the Lions. It should be resurrected. |
